As you start your day, you never plan for a toothache or a knocked-out tooth to cause an interruption; however, it occurs more often than you might think. In fact, one in six Americans faces a dental emergency every year. If you find yourself in this position, do you know what to do? How you respond to the problem could save your tooth. In addition to calling your emergency dentist in Clarksville, there are several things you should do at home to address the issue.
Treating Dental Emergencies
As with any emergency, time is of the utmost importance. Although you may be tempted to wait to see your dentist until your schedule permits, it could result in the loss of your tooth. Instead, it is best to call your dentist right away and assess the situation to respond accordingly at home.
Hold the tooth by the crown and rinse it with water. Be careful not to touch the root. Do not use any soaps, cleaners, or dry it. Carefully try to reinsert it back into the socket. If you are not successful, place it in a cup of milk or water.
Gently try to push the tooth back into position and bite on a piece of gauze to prevent it from moving.
A severe toothache may be a sign of an infection. Rinse your mouth with warm salt water and use over-the-counter pain relievers until your appointment.
Avoid chewing on your tooth and keep it clean. Apply a cold compress to the outside of your face to manage any swelling. Pain relievers can be used to help with any discomfort.
If a restoration comes loose or falls off, put it in a safe place. Do not try to bond it back to your tooth, or you may cause bacteria to become trapped under it. Maintain your oral hygiene and avoid chewing with the tooth until after the restoration is replaced.
Broken Oral Appliance
If a denture or another oral appliance breaks, stop using it right away to avoid causing an injury to your soft tissues. Do not try to fix it on your own.
Object Stuck in Teeth
Carefully try to remove it with floss. If you are not successful, do not use any sharp or metal instruments to get it out.
If you suspect your jaw is broken, go to your local emergency room right away.

When the unexpected strikes, do not wait. Call your emergency dentist right away for a same-day appointment.
